Guidance Counselor

The guidance program at the Hopewell Crest School is available to help students engage in positive learning experiences, while developing to their highest potential socially, emotionally, and cognitively.  The program combines traditional individual and small group approaches with three additional components: peer mediation, the “Character Counts” program, and the services of an ASAP counselor.  Program components are described below.

Individual and Small Group Counseling

Services are initiated in the following ways: teacher referral, self-referral, parent referral, and counselor initiated based on academic or other need. The counselor will also be available for parent and teacher consultation, and will provide referral assistance to other programs if necessary.

Peer Mediation

Peer Mediation is a school-based program bringing to the school community conflict resolution services that are currently available through County Court Systems.  Mediation is used to help resolve student disputes in a peaceful manner.  Mediation is a process that focuses on problems, not people.  Mediators are a diverse group of students who are trained to help children in conflict find ways to resolve their problems.

Character Counts

The goal of our character education program is to strengthen the character of our youth with a consistent set of ethical values, called the “Six Pillars of Character”: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.  The New Jersey Character Education Partnership Initiative has identified “Character Counts” as an approved Program of Merit

ASAP Counseling Program

Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention is a school-based program that assists students with personal and/or drug and alcohol related problems that are affecting school performance.  ASAP also promotes the general development of student’s self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, problem solving, and coping skills.  A counselor from ASAP is available once a week to work with Hopewell students.
